On June 28, 2022 I had the honor and opportunity to sing "The Star Spangled Banner," the USA's National Anthem, at the Official 4th of July Event at the US Embassy in Brazil.
I had to audition by submitting a video of me singing the National Anthem. Then I was invited to call- backs where I was recorded again with more professional equipment. The 2nd video was sent to the Charge d'Affaires (basically the acting ambassador) and the ACM (second in command). Once I found out I was selected I had the privilege of meeting with the Charge d'Affaires about singing for the event. To give you an idea of what this event was- we didn't know if the President of Brazil would be attending, or some other high-up government official(s). The president did not come, but I heard his son was in attendance, as well as, the equivalent to the Secretary of State. When I auditioned I didn't realize what a big deal this event was. Too be honest, I thought I was auditioning for the Community 4th of July event, until Josh informed me otherwise. The pressure was on, and I was sure to practice a lot. I also bought a new dress (from Amazon-ha), and lined up my awesome friend to babysit since Josh was volunteering at the event.
I got a lot of compliments, and it was great night, but the reality was - I was super nervous the night before during the run-through. I was not singing my best, and I was stressing about it. I have to give the credit to God for calming my nerves for the actual performance. I prayed that he would help me to not be nervous. The night of the event, I was relaxed walking on the stage to sing in front of approximately 1000 people. I felt like a performer, and I was happy with my performance.
After the ceremony, Josh walked over to me by the stage, and we watched an awesome firework show. Then, we were both free from our duties, so we took advantage of the free food and drinks (which meant water for us since we don't drink alcohol). We socialized for hours, and the time went by so quickly. When I looked at my phone to see the time, it was already 10:30. My friend was so awesome to watch our kids so late. It was a great date! My feet were killing me by the end of the night from my heels, but I really had a great time.
